Business Intelligence - Why You Need It and How PowerTrack Can Help

What is business intelligence? More importantly, why do you need it? Basically, business intelligence means having the necessary tools to help your strategic planning processes. These tools allow you to gather, store, access, and analyze data for sound business decision making and forecasting. For your company's overall security and growth, having good business intelligence is not only necessary, it makes good business sense. Understanding where your data comes from, knowing how your data is processed, and learning how to turn your data into useful reports enhance your trading partner relationships, reduce audit exceptions, and improve your overall financial supply chain efficiency.

Did you know PowerTrack provides you with a number of powerful business intelligence tools right at your fingertips? Think of PowerTrack as your own information bank that houses all of your financial and logistics data. You can easily tap into this information bank and make your current processes much more efficient, effective, and profitable. PowerTrack user Mike Bauer, logistics analyst for Royal Appliance, states that "the business intelligence available in PowerTrack has been invaluable to us in getting the right products in the right distribution centers and accurately forecasting costs. It is helping us manage our business immensely and is having an affect on overall profitability."

To analyze your data, take advantage of PowerTrack's easy-to-use data analysis reporting tools for:

  • Financial and logistics planning
  • Delivery performance improvement
  • Developing best practices
  • Customer and vendor research

PowerTrack offers two different types of user-friendly data analysis reporting capabilities:

  • Standard Reports. Standard Reports are predefined reports that display your financial and logistical data.
  • Ad-Hoc (customized) Reports. Ad-Hoc reports allow you to build a wide range of tailor-made reports by choosing the transaction data you want to see.

Standard reports feature highly detailed summary reports with line-item detail. Examples of widely-used standard reports include:

  • Payment Delays reports
  • Unmatched Transactions reports
  • Spend by Seller reports

Ad-Hoc reports allow you to pull as many transaction details that you feel are necessary. You can quickly download large amounts of detail and condense the information into simple reports relevant to you.

Most importantly, both data analysis reporting tools offer cost-saving data.

To access the data analysis reports, log in to PowerTrack and select Reports along the top menu bar and scroll down to Data Analysis. Once the new window opens, you will have the ability to run both standard reports and saved ad-hoc reports (your saved reports will be located under the My Reports tab).

Not sure which standard report you should run? Check out PowerTrack's Standard Report Definition Guides, which are located at the bottom of the list under the Standard Reports tab. The definition guides provide a brief overview and instructions for running each report.

Need assistance with Data Analysis? PowerTrack offers several Data Analysis reference resources:

  • Online help. PowerTrack's online help features a detailed reference guide for Data Analysis which includes an introduction, reporting object overviews, easy-to-follow instructions explaining how to create an ad-hoc report, and an informative simulation which allows you to practice creating an ad-hoc report. To access the online help, log in to PowerTrack, select Navigation along the top menu bar and scroll down to Help. Next, choose Data Analysis within the left-hand table of contents.

  • 2006 Financial Supply Chain Conference presentations. If you were unable to attend the 2006 Financial Supply Chain conference, you can access the Data Analysis presentations online. In addition to the online course presentations, you will also find practical exercises to help you master the skills you need to use your data effectively. To view the FSC presentations and exercises, simply log in to PowerTrack and select Conferences in the left-hand navigation bar.

  • 2007 Financial Supply Chain Conference. Watch for announcements in the next few weeks about how to register.
